This is the article created to help you to gain a better understaning of field of Bulk Material Handling. WikiPedia Free Enciclopedia describes "Bulk material handling is an engineering field that is centred around the design of equipment used for the transportation of materials such as ores and cereals in loose bulk form. It can also relate to the handling of mixed wastes. Bulk material handling systems are typically comprised of moveable items of machinery such as conveyor belts, stackers, reclaimers, bucket elevators, shiploaders, unloaders and various shuttles, hoppers and diverters combined with storage facilities such as stockyards, storage silos or stockpiles. The purpose of a bulk material handling facility is generally to transport material from one of several locations (i.e. a source) to an ultimate destination. Providing storage and inventory control and possibly material blending is usually part of a bulk material handling system. Bulk material handling systems can be found on mine sites, ports (for loading or unloading of cereals, ores and minerals) and processing facilities (such as iron and steel, coal fired power stations refineries). In ports handling large quantities of bulk materials continuous ship unloaders are replacing gantry cranes". To expand on this issue, we should add that this entire field is divided into several sub-fields and even now some companies are specializing in strictly one category or even in subcategory in certain category. In general, you can see the following divisions within the Bulk Material Handling:
Pneumatic Conveying which includes dilute phase conveying and dense phase conveying, each divided into pressure and vacuum types (each subcategory comes in different flavors as well)
Mechanical Conveying, probably the oldest type of conveying, which includes screw conveyors, belt conveyors, drag chain conveyors, bucket elevators, vibratory conveyors etc., just as in Pneumatic Conveyors, there are subdivisions in most of Mechanical Conveyor types as well.
Aeromechanical Conveyors, relatively new type of conveyors that is gaining wide popularity due to very simple design, reduced maintenance, and low energy consupmtion. These conveyors are also called cable or cable and disc conveyors.
